MEMORY
Learning plays significant role in all walks of human life. All our best attempts in the field of the education are directed to make the people learn properly. But if we just learn to react in a desirable way in the particular situation without bening able to repeat that successfully on subsequent occasions , learning is of no avail. This means, for an effective learning it is essential that we should be able to preserve our past experiences and learning and make use of them whenever needed. In the psychological world this ability of retention and repeating is known as MEMORY
many times we use the word remembering in the place of memorization. Both of these term carry the same meaning.
What is defination of memory ?
after getting some knowledge of the process of memorization or remembering it is worth while to be acquainted with the definition of the term memory given by different psychologists.
1) STOUT. : MEMORY is '' the ideal revival so far as ideal revival is merely reproductive.... This productive aspect of ideal revival requires the object of past experiences to be reinstated as far as possible in the order and manner of their original occurrence ''
2) RYBURN: The power that we have to ' store' our experiences , and to bring them into the field of consciousness some time after the experience have occurred, is termed.
TYPES OF MEMORY
like other field of human activities, individuals are found to differ in the power of memorization. Therefore it is essential to known something about the the nature of different types of memory. Some of the important types with relevance to their, are discussed blow.
1 IMMEDIATE MEMORY. :Immediate memory is needed when we want to remember a thing for a short time and then forget it. For example : We inter the cinema hall and remember the seat number given by athorty. After occupying seat we forget it. We look up a telephone number from the directory and remember it. After telephone we usually forget.
2 PERMANENT MEMORY : Under permanent memory it is possible to remember a thing permanently .remembering of our name is the simplest example of our permanent memory .
3 ROTE MEMORY : Under rote Memory, the things are learnt without understanding their meaning .Some students have a good rote memory. They can mug up the material and reproduce it at the time of examination. Although rote memory can serve the purpose well when it is needed to remember a thing for the time being and for a specific purpose, .
4 LOGICAL MEMORY : logical memory is based on the logical thinking. It takes into consideration the purposeful and insightful learning. Here instead of mechanical memorization , the learner tries to under stand what he learns and why he learns.
5 ASSOCIATED MEMORY :The individual having this type of memory is able to associate the previouly learned things with so many related and then establish multiple connections.
6 ACTIVE MEMORY : IN ACTIVE memory, one has to remain active or make deliberate attempt for recollecting past experiences.
7 PASSIVE MEMORY : In passive memory , the past experiences are recalled spontaneously with any serious attempt or will for example , when somebody comes from our native village the mere sight of him is enough to remind us about our field .
ECONOMICAL METHORDS OF MEMORIZATION
1 Recitation method : In this method the learner first reads the matter once or twice and then tries to recite and recall that without looking at that material .In this way, the recitation method provides continuous self appraisal.
2 WHOLE AND PART METHODS : There are two methods of memorizing a thing, for example take a poem . One is to read the poem again and again from the beginning till the end as a whole. This is called whole method of memorization. The poem is divided into many part and each part is memorized separtly
3 SPACED AND UNSPACED METHODS :In the spaced or distributed practice method of memorization, the subject is not required to memorize the assigned material in one continuous sitting. After memorized some times some rest is provided and in this way the principle of work and rest
